Refillable Packaging: The New Beauty Trend

The time is now for refillable packaging. Cosmetic brands have been trying to introduce these programs for over 30 years… but consumers haven’t embraced the idea until recently. Team members Kelly and Calissa got the chance to interview two insightful experts from Premi Beauty Industries to find out about their refillable packaging lines.


Laura Cifarelli is a Marketing and Communications Specialist and Federico Prestini is a Managing Director; combined they have over 15 years experience in the cosmetics industry. The Italian company designs and produces packaging for cosmetic brands around the World. This interview was able to give us an inside look into the packaging production process, and how sustainability is now a significant part of the cosmetic industry.


Premi Beauty Industries offers dozens of packaging collections; ranging from make-up, skincare, personal fragrance, to even home fragrance. However, we were most interested in their two refill collections, the Airglass Slim Refill: Airless Collection and the Refill: Accessories Collection. The Airglass Slim Refill: Airless Collection is the more popular of the two, because it offers the additional benefits airglass technology provides: less product waste and longer product shelf life.


The idea for Premi to introduce refillable packaging was sparked by the increasing demand for sustainable products from consumers. When designing these collections, Premi was careful to choose only mono materials (only using one material, instead of a blend of multiple, to support recycling). In terms of design, they are mindful to create an easy to use system, and an amazing overall look.



The steps to using the refillable packaging are simple, thanks to Premi’s thoughtful design. The picture above shows the steps to using the Airglass Slim Refill: Airless Collection, and below shows the Refill: Accessories Collection.



Since being introduced, both lines have been extremely successful, mainly because of the benefits refillable packaging can offer for brands... the biggest being the claim of sustainability, which is huge for marketing. Refills also promote customer loyalty through cost savings: buying a refill is much cheaper than having to buy a whole new bottle each time, which results in recurring orders. In order to make the packaging useful, customers have to buy the product again. Since the refillable packaging is made of similar material as other lines, there are no manufacturing or printing drawbacks for the brand, either.


Cifarelli explains that “packaging solutions, like refillables are the ideal solution to create a win-win situation for all parties involved: the brand can offer a sustainable product, that is mandatory nowadays as consumers increasingly demand products and packaging with sustainable profiles. Consumers can continue to take care of themselves and at the same time as their planet!”


As of right now, Premi Beauty Industries offers packaging solutions only for beauty and pharmaceutical industries. They have been successful in these areas and are continuing to grow as a packaging company. With the rise in value of eco-friendly packaging, Premi Beauty is excelling.
